Rome Holiday Weather Overview

Italy's famous capital and home to the Pope, Rome has become an international icon for the Catholic church. With its rich architectural, religious and political heritage, Rome is a diverse blend of culture and history.

As one of the world's most visited cities, it's famously said that there is never a bad time to go to Rome. From its ancient sites and historic culture to its modern bustle and interesting musical scene, there's always something to see or do in the Eternal City, no matter what the season or the weather.

Known as the 'Eternal City', Rome is a huge metropolis with several distinct suburbs. The Modern Centre, which is the most common tourist spot, boasts the majority of hotels, eateries and shopping. Nearby, the Vatican and old city are home to the most prominent landmarks.

Both a tourist haven and a mecca for followers of the Catholic faith, Rome offers something for everyone. With the Colosseo area boasting a large majority of the ancient Roman ruins, visitors can enjoy walking to the Palatine Hill, the Flavian Palace and the Colosseum, all within a short distance.

Just as famous for its food and wine as it is for its architecture, Rome also boasts some of the best restaurants in Italy. Home to a variety of Italian flavours, visitors will enjoy trying all sorts of delicatessen, which can be polished off with a large helping of the famous gelato.

Nightlife in Rome is also gaining an international presence. With a growing youth culture in the capital city, discos and night clubs are becoming standard fanfare in local nighttime entertainment.

When is the best month to visit Rome?

The most common time to visit Rome is during the summer holiday months of June, July and August. Many European school children take summer trips with their schools to the Vatican and other historical sights. Since Rome weather is relatively mild year round, however, most months of the year lend themselves to sightseeing on foot.

What's the Weather Like in Rome?

Rome's weather varies from very hot in the summer to distinctly cool in the winter, and rather damp in the autumn. However, the weather is rarely severe or disruptive, and so your preferred season for visiting Rome will largely depend on what you want to get from your holiday.

Holy Week and Spring

Holy week and Easter are extremely busy times in Rome, as large crowds are drawn to the Vatican and the Holy See. Although it can be hectic and expensive, this is an excellent time to visit to see Rome at its vibrant best.

Temperatures in March and April tend to be a comfortable 15-18°C but it can rain on as many as 1 in 3 days, so take a lightweight jacket or an umbrella. As the spring flowers bloom, Rome's parks become especially beautiful, and it's often the perfect weather for picnics.

High summer in Rome

Guidebooks will often tell you to avoid Rome in August, for several reasons. Firstly, the heat - temperatures can reach 30°C, but it will feel hotter because of the urban heat effect. Secondly because Romans themselves tend to desert the city, leading to a somewhat artificial and touristy experience.

Having said that, prices tend to be lower in high summer, and there are many outdoor events and cultural experiences to enjoy. There will still be crowds, but they'll be mostly foreign visitors rather than locals.

Gastronomic Delights

If you're a fan of Italian cuisine, autumn is the best time to visit Rome. As the harvest comes in, the restaurants come to life and the local markets team with mushrooms, truffles and other delicacies.

The weather in Rome during the autumn months can be quite wet, with around 4 inches of rain each month, and rain every few days on average. However, temperatures are still pleasantly mild and the historic sites are less crowded, so this is definitely an appealing time of year for your Roman visit.

A Roman Christmas

December is a fascinating time of year to visit Rome, as the city's Catholic and religious roots really shine. Christmas lights decorate the city and nativity scenes are everywhere. Outdoor cafes offer mulled wine and hot chocolate, and most of Rome's sights and attractions remain open during the winter months. December temperatures range between 4 and 8°C, so much cooler than the rest of the year, and the rain continues every few days. Take a sweater and an umbrella, but don't allow the weather to put you off discovering the delights of the Eternal City.

What to pack and wear in Rome?

With the weather in Rome staying mostly warm, particularly during summer (June to September), light cotton clothing is ideal for sightseeing. During the evenings, Rome weather can cool down some and a light sweater may be necessary for nighttime outings. Modest clothing is required for the Vatican and other religious sites, so visitors should be aware of this requirement when packing.

May and July are the best month to go for holiday or travel to Rome. The weather averages gathered from Rome weather forecast and Rome weather history also forecast these months temperature to be around 23°c and average of 257.0667 hours of sunshine in a month.
