HOLIDAY WEATHER New York

Summer

The climate on New York is generally humid continental which subsequently results in two longer summer and winter seasons.

Summer generally develops in New York towards the end of April, where the temperature vastly increases from March with a maximum average temperature of around 13°C.

Usually New York experiences a humid continental climate during summer, with the weather continuing to rise in temperature throughout the season.

From May to September, the average temperature remains in the early to late 20s and whilst precipitation is still common, the summer makes for a great time to sight see in New York and take in some of the amazing views with the sun booming down.

Winter

Winter begins as the temperature plummets in October which sees the average hover at around 10°C before consistently remaining around and under the freezing mark from December to February.

Rainfall can be common, as can snow fall in winter, which can make getting around New York quite tricky at times but also produce some magnificent views.

Central Park covered in snow is beautiful, while New York City is principally less affected than other cities in the state of New York such as Albany and Syracuse.

About New York

New York City, often shortened to New York, is the capital of the state of New York and the third-most crowded city in all of the United States.

One of the most popular and famous cities for tourism in the world, New York’s well-known skylines and vast skyscrapers are known across the world.

Find out more about New York or view more top holiday destinations.

Attractions

New York, also known as “The Big Apple”,  has an endless array of attractions that visitors often struggle to get through on even a week’s holiday there.

Colossal sculpture the Statue of Liberty in the middle of New York Harbor is one the most well-known attractions in the world, while the bright lights of Times Square are breath-taking.

Central Park is a vast 843-acre land that offers striking views, while the world-class galleries and museums in New York include the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History.

The Chrysler Centre is one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in New York, while Madison Square Garden, known as the “World’s Most Famous Arena” is well worth a tour.

Food

The cuisine of New York comprises many cuisines from ethnic groups, with Chinatown and Little Italy offering diverse yet authentic restaurants.

There are many staple dishes associated with New York, including the cheesecakes, pizzas, bagels and steaks produced in the city.

Junior’s is thoroughly recommended as the place for cheesecake, while the ever-popular John’s Pizzeria in Times Square is a renowned dining establishment of the city.

Given New York’s size and reputation, critics and visitors have long devised their own lists of top restaurants in the city for years. Taking some time to assess your preferred options prior to travel will be immensely worthwhile.

Language

51% of New York residents speak English according to a 2012 census, with the remaining 49% comprising several languages from across the world.

Spanish speakers make up roughly 25% of the city, whilst Chinese, French Creole and Russian speakers are all vastly represented in New York.

Currency

The currency of New York is the United States dollar. Visitors are advised to either purchase dollars prior to entering the US or immediately upon arrival to collect the best rates.

New York is widely acknowledged as an expensive city, with tipping also necessary for many services so it is advised to keep an eye on what fees are gratuities.

Accommodation

Luxury will not be hard to find in New York, with an enormous range of five-star hotels available for those looking for a glamorous stay.

The Towers at the New York Palace offers executive luxury, skyline views and spacious accommodation, while Langham Place will also satisfy the more expensive tastes.

Visitors on more of a budget will be very well served at the three-star Chelsea Pines Inn, with the charming Hampton Inn Times Square North also recommended.

When to visit New York?

There are great advantages to visiting New York at any time of the year. September to October is recommended as the weather remains warm and some of the summer tourists subside.

Winter can provide some memorable views, while the summer sun will appeal to many, but May through June is arguably the best time to visit with the climate very pleasant and enjoyable.

What to pack for New York?

The humidity of the summer in New York will require light t-shirts, shorts and skirts during the day, with comfort a key necessity when sightseeing.

Air condition is prevalent across shopping malls, restaurants and hotels during the summer, so a jacket may be appropriate depending on where your travels take you.

The winter is much colder in winter and bulky jackets will be necessary, as will solid boots should you end up trudging through streets covered in snow and rainfall.
